About the image:

These wildebeest made a solid choice on where to cross.  They were fortunate.  Had they entered the river a short distance upstream they would have encountered a lioness and almost certainly lost one of their own.  The big cat was resting in the tall, tufted elephant grass, alongside the next natural crossing point, invisible from approaching animals.  As they paced back and forth before crossing, they considered her gateway in addition to this one.  There was no indication they realized she was there.  But they chose correctly, and crossed the river, unharmed.

When they did move, the sounds of pounding hoofs and hot breath, along with the speedy climb, were unforgettable.
