The tiny bellow at the herd in the river seemed hilarious, as a few dozen adults moved about with deep-throated grunts and bellows of their own.
This newborn is only a few months old, but already has accumulated scars from its relatives and neighbors. There are plenty more scars in its future, as can be seen in momma’s hide. This is life in the herd for hippos, as they get into each other’s’ spaces and have their tussles. But during this afternoon respite there was no conflict, just a chance for the little one to express itself under the care of its mother.
